The Power of Affirmations

My most memorable experience with affirmations was in 2015 when I was pregnant with my first child. I had received a list of positive birth related affirmations as part of my pregnancy resources from the Hospital during a prenatal class.
I didn’t think much of it at the time but highlighted the ones that resonated with me before labour and experienced these seemingly simple sentences change my entire birth experience.
Each time I felt like I couldn’t go any further my partner would recite a highlighted affirmation, and I would repeat it. We would do this with each affirmation numerous times before moving onto the next one.
With this tool I changed the path of my labour and had a drug free birth. I felt so empowered and couldn’t believe how simple the practice was and how it lead me to believe in myself and my own abilities.
By reciting affirmations regularly we are able to create positive responses to difficult circumstances. These simple phrases can change how we perceive ourselves and our surroundings.
This is especially important for a family going through separation or divorce. Each individual once considered themselves strong and resilient and through the process is left stunned and depleted. It can be easy to become pessimistic and overtime you might find that you have developed a skepticism of anything good.
Positive affirmations are a way of breaking these habits. They are a way to heal and move forward. To build self-confidence, to restore trust and begin to feel a sense of personal security.
The key to writing a successful affirmation is to:
Always write using positive language: i.e I am, I can, I will;
Keep your affirmation short. It becomes easier to remember and recite; and
Be guided by how you would like to feel.
You might like to try this simple activity with your children, setting a time to create your own family affirmations which will guide you towards connection, love and growth. You might even like to create posters to decorate your home as a reminder.
Here are some simple affirmations you might like to try:
I am supported;
I have all that I need;
I trust the way my like is unfolding; and
I am enough and I have enough.
Recite as often as needed or try to work them into a daily practice.
“Remember that Meditation is not a way to enlightenment nor is it a method of achieving anything at all, it’s the actualisation of wisdom, the ultimate truth of the oneness of all things.”
